Find out more about Brigada do Mar’s #stopthesnowballeffect project – one of the finalists of the Ocean’s Calling award.

SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT

“As we cannot immediately inhibit the bad use of these materials (EPS and XPS) or replacing them with sustainable materials, our suggestion to generate an alert and awareness, is through decontamination actions as well as the dissemination of images and results in digital media and personally: in lectures and presentations in public places and schools.

We intend to implement actions together with the municipalities and invite the local associations in an attempt that they continue leading these actions. In each initiative, we pretend to give a lecture in a public place or school in order to educate about the need for recycling and cleaning actions.

We are going to create a #stopthesnowballeffect installation that consists of the agglomeration of the collected EPS and XPS waste, in the shape of a ball, through its bonding or containment in a net. This installation will be carried out in four schools associated with the cleaning locations, and the ball will increase in size, alerting to the problem resulting from the incorrect use and routing of this waste. The progress of the installation will be use as a forma of awareness through images over our media channels.”

“Why did you find this award relevant and decide to take part?”

“The relevance of an award of this size, combined with our know-how, recognition and experience in the field, spurred us to come up with a series of high-impact actions focusing on EPS and XPS (highly pollutant agents whose characteristics make them extremely difficult to remove from ecosystems). This is a vital opportunity to be able to help decontaminate the coastline of these agents. Our work is done by volunteers and we have no permanent funding and this initiative would considerably reduce this type of waste on the coast and raise public awareness of the need for sustainable alternatives. Thanks from the Sea for the opportunity Sociedade Ponto Verde!”

Stay tuned as we will share, over the next few weeks, more information about all the finalist projects of this initiative.
